Automatización Ganadera S.L. (Augan) attended Salamaq 2026, held from 3 to 7 September in Salamanca. The company had its own stand at one of the most important events in Spain's agricultural calendar and one of the major livestock showcases in southern Europe.

This year's Salamaq brought together 470 exhibitors from 15 autonomous communities and occupied nearly 20,000 square metres. The fair once again combined livestock exhibitions, innovation, training and professional activity, with 1,493 purebred animals belonging to 38 breeds, as well as around 40 talks, presentations and workshops involving more than 50 experts. According to the organisers, the event exceeded 90,000 visitors.

For Augan, taking part in Salamaq was a great experience and an opportunity to bring its solutions closer to professionals across the agricultural and livestock sector. During the fair, the team met in person many farmers who already trust our technology, while also speaking with visitors interested in improving efficiency, animal welfare and the daily management of their farms.

At the stand, Augan presented different solutions based on IoT sensors, designed to help farmers automate farms and remotely monitor the most important parameters of an operation. The Animal Welfare Law and its development for the pig sector remain fully in force, despite the appeal published in the BOE on 21 November 2025. Although that appeal was formally upheld, it has had no practical effect, as the affected regulation was subsequently modified through an official update, maintaining the legal obligation for livestock farms.

The appeal published in the BOE (BOE-A-2025-23549) referred to Royal Decree 159/2023, but this regulation was updated on 10 October 2025 via Royal Decree 809/2025, which invalidates the scope of the appeal. Therefore, animal welfare regulations remain in force and must be complied with.

What the animal welfare regulation means for pig farms

Royal Decree 159/2023, published by the Spanish Government, sets new requirements to improve animal welfare on livestock farms, being mandatory for all new farms built after its publication and for existing farms from 8 March 2026.

Key requirements include controlled environmental conditions, with measurements taken at the animals' head height: Ammonia (NH₃): maximum 20 ppm and Carbon dioxide (CO₂): maximum 3,000 ppm.

In addition, farms must have monthly records confirming compliance with these values, indicate corrective measures applied when limits are exceeded, and also monitor temperature and humidity in buildings.

Technology to comply with the law: sensors and IoT on farms

To comply with this regulation, it is key to invest in technology solutions based on IoT sensors that allow farms to be automated and data to be recorded continuously and reliably. Farms can rely on: NH3 / ammonia sensor, CO2 sensor, Temperature and humidity sensors, and Silo sensors for feed control. On 23 October 2025, Hotel Palacio La Marquesa hosted a new edition of Entrepreneurship Week in Aragón, where Eloy Garrigues, Augan's managing director, participated as a speaker to explain his entrepreneurial experience and the role of technology in improving livestock farms.

During his presentation, Eloy highlighted how the use of IoT sensors, farm sensors and livestock sensors allows real-time monitoring of critical parameters such as water consumption, temperature, humidity or air quality (CO2 and NH3 / ammonia) within buildings. The government has approved Royal Decree 809/2025, of 16 September, which amends Royal Decree 1135/2002 on minimum standards for the protection of pigs. The new regulation, published in the BOE and entering into force on 9 March 2026, introduces significant changes aimed at improving animal welfare on Spanish pig farms.

The decree classifies farms into three types according to their level of compliance: Type 1 (no tail docking), Type 2 (tail-docked animals with additional welfare measures), and Type 3 (all other farms).

Type 2 farms must have an animal welfare plan covering risk assessment, continuous temperature monitoring, veterinary supervision and air measurement systems. If pigs are tail-docked, they can move from Type 3 to Type 2, improving stocking density from 0.74 to 0.68 m², gaining approximately half a pig per pen. The first two requirements are having a CO₂ sensor and an NH₃ sensor; with our technology your farm can already meet this requirement.
